Alexander Archipenko

Alexander Archipenko was a Ukrainian-American sculptor and avant-garde artist. He was born in Ukraine in 1887 and began his artistic training in Kiev before moving to Paris in 1908, where he became involved in the Cubist movement. He exhibited his work in Paris, London, and New York, and was a part of the landmark Armory Show in 1913. In 1923, Archipenko immigrated to the United States, where he established a studio in New York City. He continued to create sculptures in a variety of styles, including Constructivism, Futurism, and Art Deco. He also taught art at the Art Students League of New York and at his own school. Archipenko's work explored the concept of space and volume, and he is known for his use of negative space, which allowed him to create dynamic and innovative sculptures. His work had a significant influence on later artists, especially those who embraced the modernist movement. Archipenko continued to create art until his death in 1964, and his work can be found in major collections and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.
