Alexander I of Russia

Alexander I of Russia

Alexander I of Russia was born in 1777 and became the Emperor of Russia in 1801 after the death of his father, Paul I. He began his reign by implementing a series of reforms, including the establishment of a consultative council and the formation of a university system. He also led Russia to victory in the Napoleonic Wars and played a key role in the Congress of Vienna in 1815, which determined the borders of Europe. In 1825, Alexander's reign was marked by the Decembrist Revolt, a failed attempt by a group of liberal army officers to overthrow the autocratic government and establish a constitutional monarchy. This event led to increased censorship and repression in Russia. Despite his earlier reforms, Alexander's reign became increasingly conservative and repressive towards the end of his life. He died in 1825 and was succeeded by his younger brother, Nicholas I. Alexander is remembered as a complex figure who presided over both liberal reforms and authoritarian measures during his reign.
