Amélie of Leuchtenberg

Amélie of Leuchtenberg was born on April 31, 1812, in Milan, Italy. She was the daughter of Eugène de Beauharnais, the adopted son of Napoleon Bonaparte, and his wife, Princess Augusta of Bavaria. Amélie grew up in the royal court of Munich and was well-educated in several languages. In 1834, she married Pedro I of Brazil, who was also the Emperor of Portugal. The couple had two daughters, Princess Maria Amélia and Princess Maria Isabel. After Pedro I abdicated the throne in 1831, Amélie and her family moved to Portugal. There, she became known for her philanthropy and charitable works. She was also a patron of the arts, supporting several artists and musicians. In 1839, Pedro I passed away, and Amélie returned to her family's ancestral home in Bavaria. She continued to be involved in philanthropic work, supporting various organizations that helped the poor and disadvantaged. Amélie died on January 26, 1873, in Munich, at the age of 60. She was remembered for her kindness, generosity, and dedication to serving others.
