Charles V, Duke of Lorraine

Charles V, Duke of Lorraine, was born on April 3, 1643, in Vienna, Austria. He was the son of Emperor Ferdinand III and his second wife, Eleonora Gonzaga. Charles became Duke of Lorraine in 1675, after the death of his brother. During his time as Duke, Charles fought in numerous military campaigns on behalf of France, against various European powers. He also made significant economic and cultural contributions to the region, including increasing the production of textiles and supporting the establishment of libraries and academies. In 1697, Charles was convicted of conspiring against the French King, and he was forced to abdicate his duchy in favor of his son. He spent the rest of his life in exile, mostly in the Brussels area, where he died in 1698. Despite his ignominious end, Charles V, Duke of Lorraine, is remembered as a capable ruler and a loyal ally of France. His contributions to the economic and cultural development of the region have had a lasting impact on the people of Lorraine.
