Christopher Wood (English painter)
Christopher Wood was an English painter born in 1901. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he met Ben Nicholson and Winifred Nicholson, with whom he formed the Cumberland Market Group. Later, he moved to Paris where he became friends with Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and other notable artists. Wood’s work was characterized by colorful, vibrant paintings that captured the essence of the places and people he encountered throughout his travels. He often painted landscapes and still lifes, as well as portraits of his friends and acquaintances. His paintings were heavily influenced by the post-Impressionist and Fauvist movements. Despite his promising career, Wood’s life was plagued with personal struggles, including depression and alcoholism. He tragically took his own life in 1930, at the age of 29. Wood’s legacy continues, however, with many of his paintings being featured in prominent museums and galleries throughout England and France. His work continues to inspire and captivate audiences with its lively colors and unique perspective.
