Duchess Margaret of Argyle
Duchess Margaret of Argyll was a socialite and member of the British aristocracy who gained notoriety for her scandalous divorce in 1963. She was born as Margaret Whigham in 1912 and grew up in Scotland, where she was known for her beauty and poise. In 1933, she married Charles Sweeny, a wealthy American businessman, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1947. She then married Ian Campbell, the 11th Duke of Argyll, in 1951 and became the Duchess of Argyll. However, their marriage was fraught with infidelity and scandal. In 1963, the Duchess was embroiled in a highly publicized divorce case, in which her husband accused her of adulterous affairs and produced polaroid photographs as evidence. He also accused her of stealing valuable family heirlooms. The trial was covered extensively by the media and became known as the "Dirty Duchess" case. The Duchess ultimately lost the case and became a social outcast, forced to sell her jewelry and property to pay for legal fees and settlements. She died in 1993, largely forgotten and overshadowed by the scandal that had defined her life.
