Edmund of Langley, 1st Duke of York, was born in 1341 and was the fourth surviving son of King Edward III and Queen Philippa. He was named Earl of Cambridge in 1362 and later became Duke of York. Edmund was known for his military and diplomatic skills, and was involved in several key military campaigns throughout his life, including the Hundred Years War and the Scottish Wars of Independence.

In 1385, Edmund was appointed as the Warden of the West March, a position that allowed him to gain valuable military experience and earn the respect and loyalty of the people he led. He played a key role in negotiating the Treaty of London in 1396, which helped to solidify peace between England and France.

Edmund was also a patron of the arts, and was a lover of literature and music. He founded an impressive library and was instrumental in bringing the works of writers such as Chaucer and Gower to wider audiences.
