Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle

Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle, was born on May 28, 1748, in London, England. He was the son of Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle, and Isabella Byron. Frederick attended Eton College and later went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in 1769. In 1774, Frederick was elected to the House of Commons representing the constituency of Morpeth. He was a strong advocate for American independence during the American War of Independence and criticized the government's policies. In 1780, he was appointed as the Governor of Jamaica, but he didn't stay long and returned to England in 1781. Frederick then served as the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1780 to 1782, during which he worked towards the reconciliation of the Irish Catholics and Protestants. After his tenure, he was elevated to the House of Lords and was made a Privy Counsellor in 1782. Frederick was also a patron of the arts and commissioned several paintings and sculptures, including a bust of himself by Joseph Nollekens. He was a close friend of the writer Samuel Johnson and inherited a collection of his manuscripts after Johnson's death. Frederick died on September 4, 1825, at Castle Howard, North Yorkshire. He was succeeded by his son, George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle.
