George Maximilianovich, 6th Duke of Leuchtenberg
George Maximilianovich, 6th Duke of Leuchtenberg, was born on August 23, 1852, in Munich, Germany. He was the son of Maximilian de Beauharnais and Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia. George grew up in Russia and studied at the University of Moscow.
In 1879, he married Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna of Russia, and they had four children together. George served as president of the Russian Geographical Society and was an important patron of the arts, supporting cultural institutions such as the Mariinsky Theatre and the Imperial Porcelain Factory.
After the Russian Revolution, George and his family were forced to flee Russia and settled in France. He continued to support various art institutions and became a noted collector of Russian art. George died in Paris on August 4, 1929, at the age of 76.
