George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence

George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence, was born in 1449 in Dublin, Ireland. He was the third son of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, and Cecily Neville. During the Wars of the Roses, he fought alongside his brothers, Edward IV and Richard III, and supported Edward in his claim to the throne. In 1469, George secretly married Isabel Neville, daughter of the powerful Earl of Warwick. This caused a rift between George and his brother Edward, who had arranged for him to marry another woman for political reasons. George later rebelled against Edward but was eventually forgiven and restored to his position as Duke of Clarence. However, his behavior became increasingly erratic and in 1477, he was accused of treason for plotting against Edward. He was imprisoned and later executed by being drowned in a barrel of Malmsey wine. George had two children with Isabel Neville, Margaret and Edward, but they were declared illegitimate due to his earlier marriage to another woman. His title was eventually inherited by his nephew, Edward V.
