Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich of Russia (1856-1929) was a distinguished member of the Russian Imperial family, known for his accomplishments as a military commander during several wars. He was the son of Emperor Nicholas I's fourth son, Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich the Elder, and Alexandra of Oldenburg. In his early career, Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich became a member of the Russian army and took part in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. He then went on to serve in various high-ranking positions before being appointed commander-in-chief of the Russian army during World War I. After the Russian Revolution, the Grand Duke went into exile and lived in France until his death in 1929. He was a supporter of the White Movement, which opposed the Bolsheviks, but ultimately did not become involved in politics. Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich was married twice, and had six children. He was known for his love of books and music, and was also a skilled painter. He was considered a kind and caring man by those who knew him, and his death was mourned by many.
