Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood

Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood, was born on September 9, 1882, in London, England. He was the eldest son of Henry Lascelles, 5th Earl of Harewood, and Lady Florence Bridgeman, daughter of the 4th Earl of Bradford. He was educated at Eton College and Oxford University. In 1910, Henry Lascelles married Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary. They had two sons, George Lascelles and Gerald Lascelles. During World War I, he served in the British Army and was made a colonel. He was later appointed Honorary Colonel of The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. After the war, he became involved in politics and was elected as a Conservative MP for the Pudsey constituency in West Yorkshire in 1922. He held the seat until 1929 when he inherited his father's title and became the 6th Earl of Harewood. As the Earl of Harewood, he was a keen music lover and became a patron of the arts. He was the president of the Royal Philharmonic Society from 1932 to 1948 and was instrumental in establishing the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1961. Henry Lascelles died on May 23, 1947, in Harewood, West Yorkshire, at the age of 64. He was succeeded by his eldest son, George Lascelles, who became the 7th Earl of Harewood.
