James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell
James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell was a Scottish nobleman born in 1534. He was a prominent figure in the court of Mary, Queen of Scots and played a significant role in her life. Bothwell was married to Jean Gordon, but he divorced her and married Mary in 1567, after the suspicious death of her second husband, Lord Darnley. This marriage was highly unpopular with the Scottish nobility and led to Mary's downfall. Bothwell was accused of abducting and raping Mary and was forced to flee to Norway. He was later imprisoned and died in captivity in 1578. Bothwell was known for his military prowess and his lavish lifestyle.
