James Law (Photographer)

James Law (1845-1921) was a Scottish-born photographer who became known for his portrait photography and landscapes of the American West. Law immigrated to the United States in the late 1860s and established a successful photography studio in Denver, Colorado. He soon became known for his realistic portraits of local dignitaries, such as Governor Ralph Carr and Mayor Richard Sopris. In addition to his portraits, Law travelled extensively throughout the West, photographing landscapes and documenting the region's natural beauty. He became a pioneer in panoramic photography, creating sweeping images of the Rocky Mountains and other scenic vistas. His work was widely published in newspapers, magazines and guidebooks and became popular with tourists and nature enthusiasts alike. Despite his success, Law remained humble and committed to his craft, always striving to capture the essence of his subjects in his photographs. He continued to photograph until his death in 1921, leaving behind a legacy of stunning visual images that continue to inspire and captivate audiences today.
