James V of Scotland
James V of Scotland was born in 1512 and became king at only 17 months old after the death of his father, James IV. His early reign was characterized by political instability and international conflict between Scotland and England. In 1542, James made a failed attempt to invade England and was defeated at the Battle of Solway Moss. The failure of this campaign greatly affected his health, and he died shortly thereafter, leaving the throne to his only surviving daughter, Mary, Queen of Scots. James is remembered as a passionate and charismatic king who helped bring about a cultural and artistic flowering in Scotland. However, his reign was also marked by economic problems and a turbulent relationship with the powerful Scottish nobles.
