Marie Sophie of Hesse-Kassel was a German princess born on May 28, 1767. She was the daughter of Prince Frederick of Hesse-Kassel and Princess Caroline of Nassau-Usingen. In 1790, she married Prince William, who became the King of the Netherlands in 1815. Marie Sophie was known for her philanthropy and her support of the arts. She was also well-educated and spoke several languages. During her husband's reign, Marie Sophie was actively involved in charitable organizations and supported the education of girls. She founded a school for needlework and lace-making and supported the establishment of other schools and institutions. Marie Sophie was also a patron of the arts and commissioned several paintings and sculptures. Marie Sophie's husband died in 1843, and she lived for another five years as a widow. She died on November 9, 1848, at the age of 81. Marie Sophie was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam next to her husband.
