Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood

Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood was the only daughter and fourth child of King George V and Queen Mary. She was born on April 25, 1897, and her full name was Victoria Alexandra Alice Mary. Mary was educated at home by a governess and later attended a finishing school in Paris. She was known for her sporting abilities, particularly in tennis, swimming, and horse riding. In 1922, Mary married Henry Lascelles, the 6th Earl of Harewood. They had two children, George and Gerald. Mary and her husband were both passionate supporters of the arts and promoted cultural activities in Leeds, where they lived. During World War II, Mary served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Red Cross in Northern Ireland. She was also a patron of numerous charities and organizations, such as the Girl Guides and the Women's Voluntary Service. Mary was the first member of the royal family to visit the Soviet Union in 1934, where she met with Stalin and other Soviet leaders. She was also the first member of the royal family to make a transatlantic radio broadcast in 1927. Mary died on March 28, 1965, at the age of 67. She was laid to rest at Harewood House, the family estate, next to her husband who had died two years earlier.
