Nicholas I of Russia

Nicholas I of Russia (1796-1855) was the Emperor of Russia from 1825 until his death. He was the son of Emperor Paul I and gained the throne after the death of his elder brother Alexander I. Nicholas I is remembered for his repressive policies, including censorship, secret police surveillance, and a stringent system of military conscription. He was also involved in several wars, including the Russo-Persian War, the Russo-Turkish War, and the Crimean War. Despite his autocratic rule, Nicholas I did initiate some reforms, including the construction of railways, the abolition of serfdom in some Baltic provinces, and the expansion of universities. He died unexpectedly while visiting troops in the Crimea during the Crimean War.
