Paul I of Russia

Paul I of Russia

Paul I of Russia was born in 1754 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was the son of Catherine the Great and was expected to take the throne after her. However, his mother had him exiled and he spent many years in Germany before returning to Russia. When he finally became emperor in 1796, he tried to undo many of the reforms his mother had put in place. He also tried to make Russia more isolated from the rest of Europe and took unpopular actions, such as allying with France and going to war with Britain. Paul was known for his erratic behavior and paranoia, which led him to make many enemies. In 1801, a group of conspirators, including his own son, assassinated him. Overall, Paul's reign was short and controversial. He is remembered for his attempts to undo his mother's legacy and for his unusual personality.
