Penny Marshall
Penny Marshall was an American actress, director and producer. She was born on October 15, 1943 and died on December 17, 2018. She grew up in a show business family with her brother, Garry Marshall, also becoming an accomplished director and producer. Marshall began her career in entertainment as a television actress in the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in shows such as The Odd Couple and Happy Days. In the late 1970s, she transitioned to directing, making her feature film debut with the 1986 comedy Jumpin' Jack Flash. However, her breakthrough came with her second film, 1988's Big, which starred Tom Hanks and was a critical and commercial success. She went on to direct several other successful films, including A League of Their Own, Awakenings, and The Preacher's Wife. Outside of her work in film, Marshall was also known for her philanthropy and activism, particularly in the areas of education and health care. She was diagnosed with lung and brain cancer in 2009 and passed away in 2018.
