Philip, Duke of Parma

Philip, Duke of Parma, also known as Felipe de Borbón y Parma, was born on March 22, 1970, in Madrid, Spain. He is the youngest child of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain. Philip studied economics and international relations in the United States at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and then at the School of Foreign Service at the same university. He also attended the Spanish Army Academy and served in the Spanish Armed Forces. In 2003, he married Princess Mathilde of Belgium, and the couple has four children. In 2013, he succeeded his father as King of Spain, becoming King Felipe VI of Spain. Philip also holds the title of Duke of Parma, a title traditionally held by members of the House of Bourbon-Parma, a cadet branch of the Spanish royal family. His grandfather, Infante Carlos of Spain, Duke of Calabria, was the last reigning Duke of Parma before the title became extinct in 1859. As Duke of Parma, Philip is an honorary member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Parmesan Academy of Science, Letters and Arts. He has also been awarded various honors and distinctions from Spain, Belgium, and other countries.
