Prince Bertil, Duke of Halland (1912-1997) was the third son of King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden. He served in the Swedish Navy during World War II then went on to represent Sweden in sailing at the 1948 London Olympics. Bertil was known for his love of cars and played a key role in the development of the Saab automobile brand. In 1976, after the death of his older brother Prince Bertil became the Crown Prince, but he renounced his right to the throne in order to marry his long-time love, Lilian Davies. They were granted permission to marry by the king and the couple went on to have a happy marriage until Bertil's death in 1997. He is remembered for his dedication to his royal duties, his love of cars and his strong support of charitable causes.
