Prince Bertil of Sweden (1912-1997) was a member of the Swedish royal family. He was born on February 28, 1912, in Stockholm, Sweden, and was the third son of King Gustaf VI Adolf and Queen Margaret of Sweden. Prince Bertil was known for his love of cars and racing and was a skilled driver. During World War II, he served in the Swedish navy and was active in humanitarian work. In 1976, Prince Bertil married Lilian Davies, a Welsh-born commoner, and the couple lived together for over 30 years before they were finally able to marry in 1995. They had no children. Prince Bertil's younger brother, Carl Gustaf, became King of Sweden in 1973, and Prince Bertil was a beloved member of the royal family, often representing the King at official functions. Prince Bertil died on January 5, 1997, at the age of 84. He was remembered as a charming and affable member of the royal family who was deeply devoted to his country and his family. His funeral was attended by members of the Swedish royal family as well as representatives from other royal families around the world.
