Prince Joachim of Prussia

Prince Joachim of Prussia was born on June 17, 1890, in Berlin, Germany. He was the sixth child of Emperor Wilhelm II and his wife, Augusta Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein. Growing up, Prince Joachim was educated by private tutors and showed a love for sports, particularly equestrianism. He also developed an interest in military matters and joined the German Army in 1911. During World War I, Prince Joachim served on the Western Front and was wounded twice in battle. After the war, he remained in the military and rose to the rank of Major General. In 1918, Prince Joachim married Princess Marie-Auguste of Anhalt, with whom he had five children. The couple divorced in 1920, and Prince Joachim remarried later that year to Princess Marie-Elisabeth of Saxe-Meiningen. They had one child together before divorcing in 1926. In 1931, Prince Joachim retired from the military and settled in Potsdam, where he became involved in horticulture and conservation efforts. He also continued to participate in equestrian events and was an accomplished horse breeder. During World War II, Prince Joachim was initially placed under house arrest by the Nazis due to his opposition to their regime. However, he was later released and lived out the remainder of the war in relative seclusion. After the war, Prince Joachim’s properties were confiscated by the Soviet government, and he was forced to flee to the West. He settled in Bad Kissingen, where he died on March 18, 1923, at the age of 82.
