Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont

Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont was born in Arolsen, Germany, on February 17, 1861. She was the third child and second daughter of Prince George Victor of Waldeck and Pyrmont and his wife, Princess Helena of Nassau. In 1882, Princess Helena married Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, a son of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The couple had two children together: Alice and Charles Edward. Princess Helena was actively involved in charitable work and was a patron of several organizations. She also helped to establish the Princess Helena College, a girls’ school in Hertfordshire, England. Tragically, Prince Leopold died in 1884 at the age of 30. Princess Helena was left to raise their two young children alone. She remained active in her charitable work and continued to be a respected member of the royal family. Princess Helena passed away on September 1, 1922, at the age of 61. She was buried at the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore in Windsor, England.
