Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll
Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll was born on March 18, 1848, in London, England, as the sixth child and fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She was educated at home and showed a talent for art, which she pursued throughout her life. In 1871, Princess Louise married John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne, who later became Duke of Argyll. They lived in Canada, where Lorne served as Governor General from 1878 to 1883. Princess Louise was a patron of the arts, and her interest in art led her to study sculpture. She exhibited her work at the Royal Academy of Arts and became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. Princess Louise was also involved in social and charitable work. She supported women's suffrage, worked to improve conditions for the poor, and was a patron of several organizations, including the Girls' Friendly Society and the Royal British Nurses' Association. After her husband's death in 1914, Princess Louise moved to Kensington Palace, where she remained until her death on December 3, 1939, at the age of 91. She was buried at the Royal Burial Ground, Frogmore.
