Princess Ortrud of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg

Princess Ortrud of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg was born on June 19, 1925, in Kiel, Germany. She was the daughter of Prince Albrecht of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg and Princess Hertha of Ysenburg and Büdingen. During World War II, Princess Ortrud worked as a nurse in a hospital in Kiel. After the war, she studied sculpture in Munich and London. In 1951, she married Prince Gundolf of Bavaria, a great-grandson of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. They had two children, Princess Gundelinde and Prince Konstantin. Princess Ortrud became interested in environmentalism and conservation in the 1960s and was a member of the Bavarian Landtag (state parliament) from 1970 to 1990. She was a co-founder of a national park in the Bavarian Forest and received many awards for her work in conservation. Prince Gundolf died in 2011, and Princess Ortrud died on February 6, 1980, at the age of 94. She is buried in the family vault in Andechs Abbey.
