Queen Helene Of Romania
Helena of Romania was born on May 8, 1896, in Peleș Castle, Sinaia, Romania, as Princess Helen of Greece and Denmark. She was the third child and second daughter of King Constantine I of Greece and his wife, Queen Sophia. In 1921, she married the future king of Romania, Crown Prince Carol, at the Royal Palace in Athens. They had one son, Michael, who became king of Romania in 1940. On June 8, 1930, Carol became King Carol II of Romania, and Helena became queen consort. However, their marriage was rocky, and their relationship deteriorated over time, leading to a divorce in 1940. During World War II, Helena supported her son Michael and the anti-German resistance. She remained in Bucharest during the war, even as the Germans occupied Romania. After the war, Michael was forced to abdicate by the communist regime in 1947. Helena went into exile with her son and lived in the United Kingdom and Switzerland until her death in Lausanne on November 28, 1982.
