Robert Spencer, 2nd Earl of Sunderland

Robert Spencer, 2nd Earl of Sunderland, was born on August 5th, 1641. He was the eldest son of Henry Spencer, 1st Earl of Sunderland, and Lady Dorothy Sidney. He was educated at Oxford University and served as a Member of Parliament. Sunderland was appointed as Secretary of State for the Northern Department in 1679 and played a prominent role in the politics of the era. He was a strong supporter of King James II and helped to negotiate the Treaty of Dover in 1670. After James II was deposed in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, Sunderland went into exile in France but later returned to England and played a role in the accession of William and Mary. He was appointed as Lord President of the Council in 1694 and served in this position until his death on September 28th, 1702. Sunderland was known for his political skills and his dedication to the Whig party. He was also a patron of the arts and sciences and was heavily involved in the development of the Royal Society. His legacy remains an important one in British political history.
