William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings

William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, was born in 1431 in Leicestershire, England. He served as a soldier during the Wars of the Roses and was knighted in 1461 by Edward IV. Hastings played a key role in establishing Edward IV on the throne and was appointed as his Lord Chamberlain. He was also a close friend and advisor to the king. When Edward IV died in 1483, Hastings supported his young son, Edward V, becoming king. However, Edward was imprisoned in the Tower of London by his uncle, Richard III, who then declared himself king. Hastings was initially supportive of Richard III's reign, but later became concerned about his rule. In 1483, Hastings was accused of conspiring against Richard III and was executed without trial. He was buried at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. Hastings was known for his wealth and generosity, and he was a patron of the arts. He was also the father of six children, including George Hastings, 1st Earl of Huntingdon.
