Anne Henriette of Bavaria

Anne Henriette of Bavaria was born in 1648 in Paris. She was the daughter of Edward of Bavaria and Henriette Adelaide of Savoy. Her father was a French general and military commander. Anne Henriette was brought up in the French court and received a good education. In 1663, Anne Henriette was betrothed to Prince Philippe of France, Duke of Orleans, and cousin of King Louis XIV. They were married in 1669. Anne Henriette's father died on the same day as her wedding, leaving her without an inheritance. Philippe and Anne Henriette had four children, three boys and a girl, but only two survived infancy. Anne Henriette was known for her wit and intelligence, but her marriage was unhappy. Philippe was unfaithful and had many mistresses. Anne Henriette had affairs of her own, including with the king's brother, the Duke of Orléans. Despite this, she remained devoted to her husband and children. Anne Henriette was also known for her love of music and the arts. She was a patron of the composer Jean-Baptiste Lully and supported the establishment of the Paris Opera. She was also an accomplished musician herself and played the harpsichord. Anne Henriette died in 1723, aged 74. She was buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis. Despite her unhappy marriage and lack of inheritance, she had a relatively long and eventful life. She is remembered as a patron of the arts and an intelligent and witty member of the French court.
