Ferdinand of Romania

Ferdinand of Romania was born on August 24, 1865, in Sigmaringen, Germany, as Prince Ferdinand Viktor Albert Meinrad of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. He was the second son of Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Infanta Antónia of Portugal. In 1886, Ferdinand was elected as the prince of Romania, following the death of King Carol I. On January 10, 1893, he married Princess Marie of Edinburgh, granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Ferdinand became king of Romania in 1914, after the death of his uncle, King Carol I. During World War I, he supported the Central Powers until the Russian Revolution of 1917 forced Romania to switch sides. In 1922, Ferdinand signed the Treaty of Trianon, which recognized the independence of Romania and established its borders. He is also known for his efforts to promote Romanian culture and traditions, as well as his advocacy for women's rights and education. Ferdinand died on July 20, 1927, in Sinaia, Romania, at the age of 61. He was succeeded by his grandson, Michael I of Romania, who became the last king of Romania.
